Step into our home for a warm, authentic experience where you’ll learn to make Madeira’s traditional Bolo do Caco from scratch. More than just baking bread, this is a chance to connect with our family, learn local traditions, and savor the rich flavors of Madeira.
Bolo do Caco is the most traditional bread of Madeira, a soft and slightly chewy flatbread cooked on a hot stone or skillet. It’s often served warm before meals, generously topped with Manteiga de Alho (garlic butter), making it an irresistible start to any gathering or feast.
Together, we’ll mix the dough, shape it, prepare the classic garlic butter, and cook the bread. Then, we’ll gather around the table to taste our creations, enjoy traditional drinks, and share stories — a true taste of culture and connection.
Upon arrival, we’ll give you a brief explanation of what we’ll be doing and share a bit of the story behind Bolo do Caco.
Under Nati’s expert guidance, we’ll begin by mixing all the ingredients by hand. This is the first and most essential step in creating perfect Bolo do Caco.
Once the dough is ready, we’ll move on to shaping it. You’ll have the chance to make two types of bread:
While the bread rests and leavens, we’ll take a break to prepare the traditional Manteiga de Alho (garlic butter) — the classic, flavorful spread for Bolo do Caco. During this time, we’ll also serve you some refreshing traditional drinks, like poncha.
Here’s where the magic happens! Nati will demonstrate how to cook the bread, and you’ll have the option to try it yourself. This part involves fire, but it’s completely safe, and you’re always welcome to simply watch if you prefer not to handle it.
Once the first batch of bread is cooked, we’ll set the table and gather together to enjoy what we’ve created. Fresh, warm Bolo do Caco paired with homemade garlic butter and a glass of your chosen drink — a perfect way to celebrate our work and connection.
The entire experience takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, with plenty of time to enjoy the process, ask questions, and savor the results.
Guests are welcome to stay longer, and many often do, spending 2 to 3 hours with us. After all, this experience is not just about making bread — it’s about being part of the culture, sharing stories, and enjoying the warm, authentic atmosphere of our home.
Whether you choose to get hands-on or simply enjoy observing, this experience is safe, relaxed, and welcoming for everyone.
We can’t wait to share this unique tradition with you — one that’s been part of our family for generations!
